Lebanon takes its name from a stand of hickory trees on the site that reminded one of the town’s commissioners of the Biblical cedars of Lebanon. Botanical confusion aside, Lebanon boasts of being “The Friendly City” with beautiful parks, a solid educational system and a wide array of community activities for residents to enjoy.
The home of the Cragun House, this 1893 building was once the home of Strange Nathaniel Cragun and his family. Avid world travelers, the Cragun family filled their home with pieces collected on their travels as well as locally. Now owned by the Boone County Historical Society, which is headquartered there, the Victorian Cragun House has recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
We’re not certain as to Mr. Cragun’s character. It appears that ‘Strange’ was indeed his real first name. One wonders just what his parents were thinking….
