Kokomo takes its name from a Miami Indian chief whose name translates as “Black Walnut”. Originally settled as a trading post by white men in the early 19th century, in 1844 David Foster (founder of the trading post) donated 40 acres of his land to create a county seat for the community. Kokomo the city was incorporated in 1865. Shortly thereafter, natural gas was discovered in the area, which lead to a 20 year boom. In part because of the ready availability of this cheap energy source, the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Works began making stained glass in Kokomo in 1888 and has been in operation continuously ever since.
Kokomo is known as the “City of Firsts” because of the many inventions and innovations that have come from the city and its residents. The first successful trial of Elwood Haynes ‘horseless carriage’, first pneumatic rubber tire, first aluminum casting, stainless steel, the Howitzer shell, mechanical corn picker, push button car radio and all-transistor car radio are all ‘firsts’ that Kokomo has given us.
