Repair or Replace

Will I be better off repairing my unit, or do I need to replace it?

This is a question that we deal with every day at Solar Bear. Every situation is unique, and the best answer to that question depends on a number of factors including the age of your unit, the overall costs of repairing vs. replacing, and how long you intend to keep your home.

How long does a typical unit last?

For most of the country, an HVAC unit can last 10 to 15 years. In certain extreme climates, this may be shorter: in Arizona, for example, the average life of an air conditioner is only 8 to 12 years. In general, the more severe the climate, the shorter the life of a system.

A new unit is expensive—can’t I just repair it and go on?

A new HVAC unit is one of the largest home purchases you’ll ever make. Thankfully, manufacturers often have seasonal rebates or other deals, and many manufacturers offer financing programs to make buying a new unit easier.

A repair isn’t that much compared to a new unit. Isn’t that just as good?

Most repairs are much cheaper than the cost of a new unit. However, as units age they tend to need more and more frequent repairs, and these repairs tend to be more and more expensive. If your older unit is showing signs of being a magnet for the repairman, then a new unit can be a more cost-effective solution.

Don’t newer units cost less to operate?

Yes, they do. New units tend to have higher efficiency ratings and lower energy and operating costs than older units, and also need less maintenance and fewer repairs. Your Solar Bear representative can discuss your units SEER and AFUE rating, explain what these ratings are, and help you compare ratings between different models and makes of HVAC systems.

Can a new unit actually save me money?

In some cases, the lower cost of a new high-efficiency unit can virtually pay for itself over the life of the unit. In other cases, having Solar Bear perform a maintenance inspection and complete tune-up of your system may be all that you need to enjoy lower operating costs for your present unit.

The decision to replace an HVAC system is always an important one, and at Solar Bear we want to help you make the best possible decision for you, your home, and your wallet.
